Bed Bugs Extermination Preparation

Bed Bugs were all over the news in 2010 and it doesn’t look much better in 2011. The EPA and other Federal Agencies will hold a Bed Bug Summit, February 1-2 , 2011 in Washington , D.C.

The summit is open to the public and will focus on ways the federal, state, and local governments can come together with research, housing and pest management to combat the problem.

The first Bed Bug Summit was held in April 2009 and led to the formation of the Federal Bed Bug Workgroup made up with representatives from the EPA.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Agriculture, Department of Defense, Department of Commerce, and the National Institute of Health.

The summit will continue the dialog that began in 2009 on the Bed Bug Infestation in the United States, along with ‘ identifying knowledge gaps and barriers to effective community-wide bed bug control, proposals for next steps in addressing said gaps and barriers, and developing a framework for addressing the highest priority needs’.

A NYC health department study in 2009 found that 6% of all New Yorkers, one in fifteen adults had battled bed bugs. While not a health concern in the sense of spreading disease, bed bugs can puncture the skin, leaving red marks and welts and some people are allergic.
